These iodinated contrast media were qualitatively identified by TLC, HPLC, GC and GC/MS, but simultaneously quantitated only by HPLC. On gas chromatogram, IOT and IOD produced two peaks of the trimethylsilyl derivatives, whereas AMI gave a single peak. Therefore, quantitation by GC was successful for AMI, but not for IOT and IOD. After myelography a 50-year-old female patient progressively developed clonic convulsions, dyspnea and vomiting and a few hours later died. From the cerebrospinal fluid of the deceased taken by cisternal puncture at medicolegal autopsy, AMI was detected at 13.45 mg/ml by HPLC and at 12.99 mg/ml by GC and GC/MS.
