This time I treat the next 36 words, No. 181. fume to No.2l6. inequal. The date of the first borrowing is ascertained to be about 1386. The present study compares the date with that of the first recorded appearance in French, and elucidates the rapidity, and the cultural background, of borrowing. Special emphasis is placed on distinguishing the two sorts of French, Continental French and Anglo-French (or Anglo-Norman), thus making clear the nuance of borrowing.
