 note = {Using a patient survey, we analyzed utilization of the Yamanashi Medical University' Hospital by residents of Yamanashi prefecture. The results of field-stratified analysis disclosed three groups of patients who utilize the hospital. Group I consists of patients residing in the neighborhood of the hospital and who use it as a regional medical facility to seek examination for commonly occurring disorders. This group consists of the largest patient population utilizing the hospital. Group II comprises a small patient population seeking highly specialized treatment that can not be provided at their local hospital. Group III consists of a fairly' small group of patients using the hospital as a local center to receive treatment for disorders occurring with a high incidence in the region. These findings show that the residents of the region are using the hospital for the treatment of commonly occurring disorders and for the provision of care for chronic diseases.},
