The total number is 418, based on Appendix II : Romance Words Introduced by Chaucer in Joseph Mersand's Chaucer's Romance Vocabulary (Reissued in 1968). In this first installment 36 words will be treated. The date of the first borrowing is ascertained to be about 1386. So the present study' compares the date with that of the first recorded appearance in the French language, and elucidates the rapidity, and the cultural background. of borrowing. Special emphasis is placed on distinguishing the two sorts of the French language, Continental French and Anglo-French (or Anglo-Norman), thus making clear the nuance of borrowing.
