More than l00 papers were published in this journal in 1976 and 1977. Thereafter the yearly publication has been reduced to approximately 50 papers on the average. The number of papers dealing with personal space in Japan at present is extremely less than those published in Europe and America. Personal space is defined categorically as one of nonverbal communications. This paper discusses the interrelation between the research of nonverbal communications including personal space and the social background, on the basis of the following viewpoints. (1) Promotion of interchange has augmented the necessity of ethnocultu ral communication. (2) Diversification of social environments has given rise to the problem of man and enviroments.
