 note = {This is a study of the Latin and French loan words which Chaucer first used in the General Prologue to The Canterbury' Tales. The whole list of the Latin and French loan words in the Prologue was published already in Memoirs of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Education of Yamanashi University. NO. 30, in l979, so this is the second step of the loan word study. The number of the loan words concerned is 59, based on The Oxford English Dictionary and the inference of the present writer. The date of the first borrowing is ascertained to be 1386. So the present study compares the date with that of the first recorded appearance in the French language, and elucidates the rapidity, and the cultural background, of borrowing. Special emphasis was placed on distinguishing the two sorts of the French language. Continental French and Anglo-French (or Anglo-Norman), thus making clear the nuance of borrowing.},
